BACHELOR'S DEGREE: External Internship
Internships are a formative activity carried out by students and supervised by the University of Barcelona, aiming to apply and complement the knowledge acquired in academic training and to foster the acquisition of skills that prepare them for professional activities. Internships can be carried out in national or international companies and institutions and, in exceptional cases, at EUHT CETT UB itself, depending on the established modality.
Given the formative nature of internships, they cannot, under any circumstances, give rise to obligations typical of an employment relationship, nor can they result in the replacement of job positions.
The purpose of the internships is as follows:
- To contribute to the comprehensive education of students by complementing theoretical learning.
- To facilitate knowledge of a work methodology that is appropriate to reality.
- To promote the development of technical, methodological, personal, and participative skills, as well as values of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
- To offer practical experience that facilitates entry into the labor market.
This regulation is based on the external academic internship regulations approved by the Academic Committee delegated by the Governing Council on September 22, 2023, and by the Governing Council on October 11, 2023.
These regulations apply to all CETT services hosting EUHT CETT UB students for internships.
Internship participants include:
- Students enrolled in any official degree program offered by EUHT CETT UB.
- Students from other Spanish universities participating in national mobility programs or existing agreements.
- International students enrolled through programs that facilitate academic ties with the University of Barcelona (UB).
- Students pursuing UB's proprietary or postgraduate degrees, except those enrolled in courses with less than 15 ECTS credits.
There are two modalities of internships:
- Curricular internships: These are mandatory or elective subjects and academic activities included in the study plan of the official university degree or proprietary degree where applicable.
- Extracurricular internships: These are voluntary academic activities not included in the study plan, carried out during the student's training period and they have a minimum duration of 150 hours. These activities must be reflected in the European Diploma Supplement, as provided by the applicable regulations.
Priority must be given to students undertaking curricular internships over those pursuing extracurricular internships.
To undertake internships, students must meet the following requirements:
For curricular internships:
- Be enrolled in the corresponding subject within their program of study.
- Not have any employment relationship with the company or institution where they will intern, except in duly justified cases assessed and approved by the Career Services manager. If authorized, the internship must take place outside working hours.
For extracurricular internships:
- Be enrolled in a program of study. In the case of undergraduate degrees, students must have completed at least 50% of their credits. Exceptions can be made under the following conditions:
- The exception must be justified by the undergraduate program director (or the director for postgraduate and master’s programs).
- The Career Services manager must authorize the exception based on established criteria and after evaluating the justification.
- A signed copy of the authorization from Career Services must be included with the internship agreement.
Internship schedules must be established according to their characteristics and the availability of the company or institution where they are carried out.
Curricular internships will have the duration and schedules indicated in the subject's teaching plan. They have a maximum extension equivalent to 25% of the credits of the undergraduate degree, except for degrees that, due to European Union law, must have a different percentage and should preferably be offered in the second half of the study plan.
This rule excludes degrees that include a dual mention, whose extension ranges between 20% and 40% of the credits of the undergraduate degrees, in accordance with Article 14.5 of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28, which establishes the organization of university studies and the quality assurance procedure.
Regarding the curricular internship credits of master's degrees, they are limited to a maximum of one-third of the total credit load of the study plan, in accordance with Article 17.3 of Royal Decree 822/2021.
Extracurricular internships have the same maximum limitations as curricular internships, both for undergraduate and official master's degrees, and must have a minimum duration of 150 hours.
If a student has taken medical leave during the internship period, the center may authorize an extension of this period or the initial schedule based on the total number of hours not completed. In this case, the student must present a medical certificate.
Extracurricular internships must be carried out within the academic period covered by the enrollment. Under no circumstances can they be conducted after the official academic year of the UB and the center has ended.
EUHT CETT UB must ensure the proper development and monitoring of the student's academic activities.
The internship offers and placements are disseminated and managed through the CETT Virtual Campus. Both the entities and the students of EUHT CETT UB can access it to carry out the processes related to internships.
Students of EUHT CETT UB can access the internship offers and apply for them in accordance with the established criteria.
The Center must establish the criteria for the assignment and allocation of internships. Additionally, for each student and training project, a professor must be assigned as a tutor, following the procedures of each degree program

The completion of internships requires the prior signing of an educational cooperation agreement, which serves as the regulatory framework for the relationship between the student, the host company or institution, and EUHT CETT UB.
The agreement must comply with the following requirements:
- The agreement must be signed by the EUHT CETT UB Manager, on behalf of the rector of UB, and the legal representative of the company or institution, or their delegate.
- Internships conducted within CETT structures must be signed by CETT's General Manager
- The agreement must be formalized before the student begins their internship at the host company or institution.
- A single agreement may be signed with a company or institution, including as many training projects as agreed, or individual agreements can be signed for each training project.
- The agreement must include the training project as an annex. This project must be individualized (one for each student) and signed by the company or institution, EUHT CETT UB, and the student.
- Companies and institutions hosting interns must guarantee the students' safety and health in relation to the tasks outlined in the training project.
- Companies and institutions will not, under any circumstances, receive financial compensation for their participation in the internship program.
The agreement must include the following essential terms:
- The training project to be carried out by the student.
- The student’s permission regime.
- Accident and civil liability insurance coverage for the student.
- Personal data protection regulations.
- Financial aspects.
- The conflict resolution system.
- Terms of recognition by the University for the work done by the company or institution tutors.
- The agreement's validity period and grounds for early termination.
- The internship period and grounds for early termination.
In addition to these provisions, companies or institutions and UB centers may establish other agreements through mutual consent.
As a general rule, the internship agreement is valid for one academic year or the subscribed period, with a maximum limit of four years. It may be expressly extended for a maximum period of four additional years.
The agreement may be terminated early under the following circumstances:
- Early termination of the training project annexed to the agreement.
- Mutual consent of the parties, expressed in writing.
- A complaint by one of the parties, expressed in writing.
- Impossibility of fulfilling the agreement.
- Other reasons provided by current legislation.
Due to the EUHT CETT UB's need to organize internships well in advance to ensure students have a training project aligned with their education, especially regarding curricular internships, any complaint from the company or institution must be made well in advance of the internship start date, unless force majeure prevents this.
In all cases, the early termination of the agreement nullifies any training project underway at the company or institution.
The internship training project is an individual document for the student, annexed to the educational cooperation agreement, detailing the content and characteristics of the internship work plan to be carried out at the company or institution. The content must be defined to ensure a direct relationship between the competencies acquired during the internship and the academic studies pursued.
UB centers and companies or institutions hosting interns must formalize the training project in accordance with the model annexed to these regulations.
The training project must be developed based on principles of inclusion, equal opportunities, non-discrimination, and universal accessibility. EUHT CETT UB provides the human, material, and technological resources within its reach to ensure equal opportunities, with particular dedication to facilitating internship access for students with disabilities.
The training project must specify the educational objectives and activities to be undertaken by the interns. The objectives should be defined with the desired competencies in mind.
The training project must include the following information:
- Total number of internship hours.
- Daily internship hours.
- Internship schedule.
- Internship period.
- Postal address of the host company or institution.
- Name of the department or functional area where the internship takes place.
- Description of the tasks the student will undertake.
- Description of the specific competencies related to the degree that the student must develop.
- Description of the transversal, general, or key competencies the student must develop.
The duration of the internship is as indicated in the training project, according to the start and end dates agreed by both parties.
The internship period may be terminated early on an extraordinary basis at the initiative of:
- The company or institution The tutor must prepare a report for EUHT CETT UB explaining the reasons justifying the early termination and its temporal effects.
- The student, who must inform EUHT CETT UB of the reasons justifying the termination
- The EUHT CETT UB, when it considers with justification that the student or the company or institution is in breach of any of the clauses of the agreement, the internship pacts or agreements, or the Internship Regulations, or the educational purpose of the internship. EUHT CETT UB must notify the company or institution of this, and must also inform of its temporal effects.
The following are causes for early termination of the training project:
- The early termination of the agreement to which it is attached.
- The agreement of both parties, expressed in writing
- The complaint of one of the parties, expressed in writing
- The impossibility of fulfilling the training project
- Other causes provided for in current legislation
Participation in external academic internships involves inclusion in the general Social Security system in the terms provided in the "Economic Aspects" section of this regulation.
The internship agreement may stipulate that the company or institution provides remuneration to the student, as determined, in the form of a grant or study aid. Additionally, the agreement may establish other contributions to the center to finance the management of the internship project.
In the case of extracurricular internships, they must always be remunerated. Therefore, the obligation to register and deregister with Social Security lies with the company, institution, or entity and must comply with the provisions of Additional Provision 52 of the revised text of the General Social Security Law, approved by Royal Legislative Decree 8/2015, of October 30, effective from January 1, 2024.
In the case of curricular internships, they may or may not be remunerated. Therefore, the obligation to register and deregister with Social Security will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of Additional Provision 52 of the revised text of the General Social Security Law, approved by Royal Legislative Decree 8/2015, of October 30, effective from January 1, 2024.
